Every few weeks, I find myself on an adventure through the I-5 to travel back to my hometown. There are many people who accompany me on this voyage —Beabadoobee, Fleet Foxes, Porter Robinson — but my favorite companion, however, has always been the joyous Alison Krauss & Union Station and their Americana-infused love songs. This week, my journey back home is tracked by “Restless,” a ballad of delicate strumming and elegant fiddles that accentuate Krauss’ gentle deliveries wrapped in adoration and longing. Krauss travels across space and time after being separated from her lover, “put down, pushed down, apprehended, and led downtown,” but promises to come back to them. There’s an earthly quality to Krauss & Union Station’s mellow fusion of bluegrass and folk, and whenever I hear them come on shuffle, I find myself dreaming in waves of joy, envisioning the wonderful faces of friends and family that await me when I find my way home.
