Permanent Seating to be Installed at UCSD Softball Stadium for Spring 2013

The stadium, which occupies the southwest corner of RIMAC Field, will have 313 new stadium seats behind home plate before the 2013 season begins.

Currently, seating at the stadium consists of stair-like concrete bleachers in a single section behind home plate.

Private donations will fund the entirety of the new seating project. The naming rights for one seat is available for $200.

Senior Associate Athletic Director Ken Grosse said that there had been complaints from fans about being uncomfortable while sitting on the concrete seats.

“The current seats are ill-sized and we’ve heard complaints that the concrete is too cold and hard,” Grosse said. “Obviously the new seats will give the stadium a nicer aesthetic look and will give us a better chance for hosting postseason events.”

Grosse also said that he thinks the quality of sports facilities can impact teams’ performance.

Although the softball stadium last went through renovations before the 2011 season, the Tritons softball team won the national championship that year and lost in the championship game this past spring.

“Having a more attractive stadium is also going to help with recruiting new players to come play here,” Grosse said.

A separate multimillion-dollar initiative to build a new home team clubhouse for the baseball stadium in East Campus is also underway. Grosse said that the new clubhouse, which will replace the existing trailers that serve as clubhouses, is expected to open in time for the 2014 baseball season.

Grosse estimates that between 50 and 75 seats have already been purchased and that his office hopes to finish fundraising the over $60,000 needed by the end of the calendar year.
