On Saturday, Dec. 6, UC San Diego Athletics announced that women’s volleyball head coach Melanie Greene has stepped down. This news followed a dismal 6-24 season for the Tritons, who failed to qualify for postseason play.
“Coach Greene has transitioned out of her role to pursue new opportunities,” athletic director Andy Fee said in a press release. “We wish her the best in her future endeavors.”
Though she was head coach for the entire season, Greene’s last game on the sideline was a 3-1 win against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 1. At the time, the Tritons were 5-19 and had lost eight straight games.
The UCSD Guardian inquired about Greene’s absence on Nov. 17. A spokesperson for UCSD Athletics stated that they could not comment on personnel matters due to privacy laws.
Assistant coach Kara Barkdoll Coy served as acting head coach for the remainder of the season, accumulating a 1-5 record as the Tritons were eliminated from postseason contention.
Greene’s departure marks an abrupt end to a two-season tenure. The Tritons went 22-32 with Greene on the sideline, qualifying for the Big West Championship in their first season of eligibility. She leaves La Jolla as the Tritons’ shortest-serving coach in the NCAA era.
Greene previously served as an assistant coach at San Diego State from 2008 to 2023. She took over as head coach at UCSD in 2024 following former head coach Ricci Luyties’ exit.
A spokesperson for UCSD Athletics responded to a request for comment. They confirmed that Greene made the decision to step down but stated that they couldn’t “speculate” on the reason.
UCSD Athletics also confirmed the departure of assistant coaches Coy and Rafael Asvolinsque; the next head coach will hire their own coaching staff.
Fee announced that the search for UCSD’s next head coach would begin immediately.
