Ryan Beatty’s “Evergreen” off his experimental synthpop album, “Dreaming of David” combines whimsical harmonies with hard-hitting lyricism about longing to rekindle past connections. Beatty’s unique use of vocal modulations and layered production allows for a transcendent listening experience that is comforting and enthralling at the same time. This era of Beatty’s music is reminiscent of his work with boy band BROCKHAMPTON.
Beatty’s music is like chicken noodle soup for the gay soul. The chorus repeats: “If there’s nothing else around the corner / we can meet up right where we left.” He laments an old lover, who he has kept contact with and feels a strong urge to return to. Beatty sings of an all-too-relatable situation of desire and confusion: “We’re too familiar / we’re too tethered / what comes after? / what comes after?” The yearning themes and languorous sounds of “Dreaming of David” create a dark, moody atmosphere of escapism that is much needed this fall.
