Once you get past the ridiculously cheesy title, “Bangkok
Dangerous” appears to be a stylish, intriguing concept of a film. The action
flick features Nicolas Cage in one of his patented roles as a morally unsavory
character who discovers he actually possesses a soul, similar to “The Family
Man.” This time, Cage is a hitman of legendary talent sent to
on business, where he falls in love with a local Thai girl — naturally
incompatible with his chosen profession — setting in motion an expectedly
lethal and entertaining series of events. “Bangkok Dangerous” is a remake of a
1999 Thai film of the same title, but with the original filmmakers, the Pang
Brothers, returning for the remake. We’ve seen this plot before, but the fusion
of the normally bankable Cage (excluding the debacle that was “Ghost Rider”),
with exotic locales, Asian beauties, stylized editing and action scenes and a
hopefully taut script and shrewd plotting may very well translate into an
action film classic in the making. September 5.
