If you haven’t heard of They Might Be Giants (or TMBG, as their fans refer to it), this is the perfect opportunity to check them out. Unarguably one of the most unique bands around, They Might Be Giants is headed down to San Diego for what is sure to be an awesome show.
The band consists of two people: John Flansburg, guitarist and vocalist, and John Linnell, who plays keyboard, accordion, sax and also does vocals. The pair, old high school friends, began playing in 1982, but they called themselves “”El Grupo de Rock ‘n’ Roll”” back then. The name “”They Might Be Giants”” came from a 1971 movie of the same name. The band became widely known in 1985 after getting a review in People magazine. Over six albums and 21 years later, TMBG is still as popular as ever. The band has sold over three million records and performed over 1,000 shows during the time it has been together.
There are several unique things about TMBG. For one, the band is made up of only two people. Live performances will incorporate either a backup band or sometimes even tape backups. Beyond the simple make-up, their musical style is unique. Unconventional and eccentric, TMBG is not your average Rolling Stones/Aerosmith kind of band.
The lyrics are peculiar — one of their best known songs “”Particle Man”” is about a character, Particle Man, getting into fights with other characters, such as Triangle Man and Universe Man. While there is certainly a deeper meaning to the lyrics, the band’s distinctive style is what captures your attention. The band has done more than just albums, however. It’s also done theme songs for such shows as “”Malcolm In The Middle”” and “”The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,”” along with movie themes, such as the opening theme of “”Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.””
So, why should you go see a They Might Be Giants concert? Simply put, the band puts on a great show. It is not just a boring “”play-the-music-and-leave”” kind of band. Rather, the band interacts with the audience, through jokes and banter, entertaining both the crowd and themselves. The band is energetic and the songs are fun to listen and dance to. They clearly love what they do and the music they produce, and this translates through in the performance.
The bottom line is this: If you’re looking for a good time, with good music and good energy, check out They Might Be Giants at 4th and B this April 25.
