West Campus Loses Power Early Sunday Morning

According to the university’s sustainability website, the campus relies on a natural gas system for 85 percent of its annual electrical usage. The campus remains connected to San Diego Gas & Electric through three feeders that channel power to the East Campus Switching Station. There are no reports yet on what may have caused the outage.

Another power outage occurred last year during Memorial Day weekend, when a transformer caught fire and caused a campus-wide blackout that also affected the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Thornton Hospital. UCSD remained without power for a full day and paid $350,000 to restore the power station and its contents, according to a May 29, 2012 issue of the Guardian.
