During a 99-year-old celebration of animals and academics at
UC Davis’ Picnic Day last week, thousands of people crowded the campus’ Arc
Pavilion to watch dachshunds dressed in racing outfits compete in a 50-yard
dash.
Organizers estimated that 50,000 people attended the
festivities, which included events like the Doxie Derby, sheepdog trials and a
battle of the bands.
“I’ve only missed one since ’79,” Chris Carrere, a UC Davis
grad who is now secretary of the Davis Chamber of Commerce board, said in a
statement.
