RJD2 and Dalek
The Casbah / April 8 / 8:30 p.m. / $22
Ohio-raised DJ Ramble John Krohn’s experimental hip-hop
outfit RJD2 has recently taken a turn for the poppy in recent release The Third
Hand, hitting the masses at
own the Casbah this Tuesday. His new tunes pair toned-down rap beats with Jon
Brion pop-brite production, complete with Krohn’s own lethargic vocal melodies.
In the case of “You Never Had It So Good,” staccato keys and
simple fuzz strums complement the catchy harmonies, even if they kill some of
RJ’s street cred. Opener Dalek counteracts with his hard-hitting indie-rap,
bringing legit verses and outer-space beats to the stage. (CK)
"The Grand"
Landmark Hillcrest / Opens April 4
Set in the same vein as Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries
(“Best in Show”), “X-Men” scribe Zac Penn cashes in his word processor for the
director’s chair, helming this improvisational comedy about those
ever-so-popular poker tournaments. Penn’s feature debut boasts a cavalcade of
today’s top comic actors, from Woody Harrelson’s One-Eyed Jack to David Cross
and Cheryl Hines (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) playing the kids of Seth Schwartzman
(played by real-life poker champ Gabe Kaplan). But Werner Herzog, the famously
ambitious and brooding director of foreign classics like “Stroszek” and
“Grizzly Man,” steals the show as the mysterious and appropriately titled “The
German.” Poker enthusiasts beware — “The Grand” punctures the pomposity of the
game. (CM)
