Site Seen: Boathouse Restaurant

While transfer students stereotypically struggle to embrace campus life and get involved with extracurricular activities in their new environment, Earl Warren College junior Mike “”Hershey”” Hirshman has become an active member of UCSD.

With its soft candlelight and white tablecloths, the Boathouse Restaurant appears to be a luxury most students can’t afford. However, the prices aren’t as out of reach as they may appear.

Its mixture of class and comfort give this small restaurant a unique feel. The dim lighting, quiet atmosphere and view of the bay offer an elegant experience, perfect for a night out for two. Just across the street, a scenic view of the San Diego skyline and the Coronado Bridge create a beautiful backdrop for the restaurant. In contrast, the TV sets, bar and sociable servers give the restaurant a laid-back atmosphere, making it a great place to hang out with friends. The plaza where the restaurant resides – which looks and feels like a boardwalk – and the marina located right beneath the restaurant can leave you with a sense that you’ve been out for a night on the beach. The Boathouse Restaurant provides a great setting for any occasion with prices that allow for even those on a student’s budget to indulge.

Despite dinner prices starting at upwards of $20, weekly specials give students a chance to indulge without breaking the bank. For $9.95 and an additional purchase of an appetizer, soup or drink, you can order a dinner of king crab legs on Mondays, Maine lobster on Wednesdays or a one-inch cut of prime rib on Fridays. Each entrée is served with side orders like garlic mashed potatoes and vegetables. The food is fresh and the portions are large, so there are no worries about leaving hungry.

There are also several other specials that can save students some money. Once a month, anyone with a birthday that falls during that month receives a free prime rib dinner with any purchase. During the daily happy hour, from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., margaritas are $1.99 and appetizers, regularly in the $10 range, go for $3.

If money is not an issue, the menu also provides a variety of seafood, steak, pasta and chicken. Whether you’re looking to impress or just relax with friends, the Boathouse can accommodate a variety of budgets.
