Peter Sprugue – Jan. 12, 12:30 p.m. – Geisel, FREE
Peter Sprague, UCSD alumnus and renowned jazz guitarist, will return to his alma mater for a concert celebrating the rich tradition he’s been a part of: Sprague has played with such giants as Chick Corea and Sergio Mendes, and gives the styles of Coltrane and Miles an international flavor. Don’t be late -— the concert only lasts half an hour. (CM)
Winterfest – Jan. 12, 7:30 p.m. – Price Center, FREE
A.S. must have taken a hint from the sadly underattended Redman set at the end of last year’s Winterfest, because this year, they’ve substituted East Coast ferocity with some college student-friendly, bookworm hip-hop for us more mild types: Zion I. The Oakland duo released a collaboration album with the Grouch earlier this year, skating the line between hyphy and a more reserved, socially conscious disposition. The fest’s headlining rock act will be Cursive (right), a Nebraskan foursome who rocked emo (with cello!) before most of us had started making fun of it. Darker My Love and UV Tigers will also play.
