With a lineup featuring an aging hip-hop act that was never hip and a goth-pop group that was always crap, attending this year’s Sun God looks more like a social faux pas than a rollicking good time. Although the hipster kiddies might want to skip festivities to protect their indie cred, the show does feature a few small bands that will make it well worth attending. For example, up and coming punksters the Fully Down.
Not a big fan of punk? No matter, the Fully Down have managed to create a sound within the genre that is all their own. The Ontario, Canada-based group is composed of six members, half of which are riff-loving guitarists. Their frenetic style helped them turn out a few fun, but not great ditties that any drunken youngster could rock out to.
It’s not just their peppy tunes that make them worth checking out; they put on a helluva live show, too. With a jam-packed tour schedule that would make any roadie weary, the group obviously has a passion for playing their energetic ballads in front of a live crowd.
Punk, especially the SoCal variety, may have lost its appeal over the years (thanks to Blink 182 overkill), but one thing is for sure: The Fully Down have created an original style of punk that can be quite infectious.
