The good news: San Diego does have a real record store, and you don’t need a fast connection to access it. The bad news is that you do need a car. But after the 10 minutes it takes to cruise up to Lou’s Records in Encinitas, you’ll understand why its stickers are more common in this county than all-night Mexican joints: Two whole buildings stuffed with both new and used CDs and vinyl. It’s no Amoeba (they don’t have everything) but at least their (whole) rack of indie music doesn’t start with Green Day and end with the Killers. The selection of real hip-hop, R&B and other, locally-obscure genres like jazz and world music makes Lou’s a hangout for all types of tunesters. Sure, gas and CDs are expensive — but you’ll always enjoy the ride home.
