What do Napoleon, Saks and three musicians have in common?

In circles where the strings are sheep’s intestines and the decibels are below 120, the Eroica Trio are a force to be reckoned with. As part of the ArtPower! program at UCSD, the acclaimed Sara Saint Ambrogio (cello), Adela Peña (violin) and Erika Nickrenz (piano) will perform at the go-to UCSD concert hall, Mandeville Auditorium. The Juilliard-trained Grammy winners have been praised for their technical skill as well as their exuberance for the music they play, usually a mix of lofty classic standards, nontraditional pieces and groundbreaking modern pieces. They took the name Eroica (heroic) from Ludwig van Beethoven’s third symphony, which was originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte; but when Beethoven heard Bonaparte had crowned himself emperor, he tore up the title page in a betrayed fury.

On the program for their April 23 performance is Beethoven’s “Trio in E-flat, Op. 1”; three tangos by Astor Piazzola: “Otoño Porteño,” “Oblivion,” “Primavera Porteña”; and Maurice Ravel’s “Trio in a Minor.” The Beethoven piece fulfills the requisite classical-style piece requirement for the old (and rich) folks, but the tangos by Astor Piazzola have been a welcome addition to the Eroica Trio’s repertoire since 2000’s Pasion, their third album. The Maurice Ravel trio is a reminder of the 20th century and the fact that fantastic trios were indeed composed in that century, not just before it. Composed just before Ravel went off to World War I, the “Trio in A Minor” is arguably considered his best work and should be exhilarating in the capable hands of the Eroica Trio. This variety of styles is old hat for the trio, indicative of their love for all colors of the musical spectrum, not just the dusty-yet-legendary classics (like many of Mandeville’s classical music patrons) or more contemporary works.

Tickets for the performance are a bit steep, ranging from $32 to $36 for the general public to $18 for UCSD students. Regardless, the Eroica Trio are a huge thing in the business these days, and they put on a technically proficient and enthusiastic show. Additionally, the trio performs exclusively in clothing designed by Carmen Marc Valvo, whose evening-wear can be found in Neiman’s and Saks everywhere. So this is where all that ticket revenue goes. The Eroica Trio will perform April 23 at 8 p.m. in Mandeville Auditorium.
