The UCSD men’s and women’s swim teams made quick work of UC Santa Cruz on Nov. 6 at Canyonview Pool, winning 24 of 32 total events. These included 12 races in which Triton swimmers swept opponents by finishing in all lanes before the first Slug touched the wall. The men’s team won 13 of 16 events, taking the meet 189-101. The women’s team captured 11 of 16 events and finished the day ahead, 173-116.
The men’s team started strong in the 200-yard medley relay. The last of the three teams entered by the Tritons defeated the first of the UC Santa Cruz teams by 4.07 seconds. The first-place relay, led off by sophomore backstroker Mike Lahey, followed by senior breaststroker Brett Going, junior butterflier Bernabe Sclafani and sophomore freestyler Andy Hartunian, came in with a winning time of 1 minute, 36.01 seconds.
Lahey not only swam the backstroke leg of the winning 200-medley relay, but also won his two individual events. In the 100-yard backstroke, he pounded out a time of 53.34, beating second-place sophomore teammate Aram Yoo, who finished with a 55.15, trailing by 1.81 seconds. In the 100-yard freestyle, Lahey had a time of 48.03 to touch out sophomore teammates Tim Fuller and Andy Harutunian. Fuller swam a 48.04, just one-hundredth of a second behind Lahey, while Harutunian came in at 48.71 to out-reach the first Slug racer by 0.23 seconds.
Another two-event winner was freshman Derek Pettit, who raced the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:55.99. He also completed the 400-yard individual medley 12.53 seconds ahead of the second-place UC Santa Cruz swimmer, finishing the 16-lap race in a time of 4:14.53.
The women’s team scored big early, taking first and second place in the 200-medley relay. The first-place team included junior backstroker Caitlin Lanzon, senior breaststroker Rosanna Delurgio, junior butterflier Sarah Grant and sophomore freestyler Emily Harlan. The team swam a time of 1:49.61, coming in 3.85 seconds before the first UC Santa Cruz relay.
Harlan won both of her individual events. She completed the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.49, beating second-place Slug senior Jillian Ruppenstein, who finished in 1:03.12, by 1.64 seconds. Harlan also led the entire 100-yard freestyle race and won in a time of 54.81.
In addition to the Tritons’ impressive swimming performance, the divers also performed well. Junior Jason Boehm won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. All five Triton women entered in the one-meter and three-meter competition scored higher than their UC Santa Cruz opponents, and junior Jennie Margrave took both events.
