Head first: UCSD won its first dual meet of the year, 195-95 over UCSC.

UCSD earned first place in all but three events, the men’s one-meter and three-meter diving, and the men’s 100-yard butterfly. The team performed so well that toward the end of the meet, UCSD athletes only entered events as exhibition swimmers, allowing all points to go to UC Santa Cruz.

The UCSD women had an exceptional day, with several double-event winners and NCAA qualifiers. Junior Frances Tran came in first in the 200-yard butterfly (2 minutes, 11.95 seconds) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.89). Another double-event winner was freshman Emily Harlan, who earned consideration for NCAA qualifications in both the 50-yard freestyle (24.33) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.88).

Sophomore Sophie Levy qualified with consideration times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.97) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:09.50). Other consideration qualifiers were freshman Andrea Lippin in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:47.74) and freshman Susan Bell in the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.15).

Junior Rosanna Delurgio won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.08) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.95). Delurgio was named NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Week for her performance at the Triton Invitational on Oct. 25, where she earned two NCAA automatic qualifications.

The female divers’ performance matched that of the swimmers. Junior Ashley Vogel received first place in 1-meter diving with a score of 222.23 and second place in the three-meter diving event with 236.02. Sophomore Jennifer Margrave won three-meter diving with a score of 254.40 and came in second in one-meter diving with a score of 210.75.

On the men’s side, it was a great day for the rookies. Freshman Tim Fuller was the only double-event winner for the UCSD men. He placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.04) and the 100-yard freestyle (48.51). Freshman Charlie Rudy won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.23 and completed a first-place exhibition swim in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.42).

Other freshmen earning first-place finishes were Dan Gremban in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.57) and Aram Yoo in the 100-yard backstroke (55.00). Junior transfer Ben Falcioni won the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.65) and freshman Jacob Dong won the 200-yard backstroke (2:13.85).

Sophomore diver Jason Boehm came in second to Santa Cruz’s Adam Guiterrez in both diving events.

The meet revealed UCSD’s strength and depth, especially within the freshman class.

“”Both teams should do better this year,”” UCSD head coach Scott McGihon said. “”Those are expectations shared by the whole team.””

On Nov. 8, UCSD will compete at UC Davis, and they hope to improve on last year’s performance.

“”Last year UC Davis beat us at conference,”” team captain Christine Hyjek said. “”We have a really positive attitude going into this. We want to show them what a strong team we are this year.””
