For those of you devoted fans who have been faithfully watching our UCSD male athletes score those goals, spike those balls and go yard, now is your chance to buy your very own male athlete for a night out on the town.

And no worries about being disappointed, because these athletes have the perfect package ‹ brains, brawn and beauty ‹ and they’re all ripe for the pickin’! It’s the best fall sale that you don’t want to miss! Look, it’s simple economics. There’s a demand for guys like these, and well, now there’s a supply.

The Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity ‹ also known as Pike ‹ and numerous UCSD male athletes are teaming up to hold the A.S. sponsored UCSD Male Athlete Auction at Porter’s Pub on Oct. 20 at 9 p.m.

These men will be off the court, out of the pool, and ready to go. You can get an up-close-and-personal glimpse of that player you’ve been eyeing all season. And now you can see their game not only on the field, but off the field, as well.

“”[We] thought this auction would be a great way to establish a personal connecting point to UCSD athletics by advertising through the Greek system,”” Pike president Jim Scheible said. “”All the benefits go to [Intercollegiate Athletics]. We would like to try and help out athletics and Triton Tide by giving them money for promotions.””

Athletes will be auctioned off individually, or in groups, for one date. Bidding starts at $5. Flash those bills, clear your throats and start hollering out for your favorite athlete. You’ll get your very own athlete at an all-expenses paid date, whether it’s at a swanky restaurant, relaxing at a spa, or fun in the sun on a kayak.

Pike is presenting a smorgasbord of over 25 willing and able athletes on the auction block for you to have lots of fun with. Athletes are available from virtually every sport ‹ water polo, baseball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track and field, and swimming.

Sure, it’s important to watch them play and win, but this also adds a fun flair and a personal touch for anybody who wants to get to know his or her favorite athlete.

All of the proceeds from the UCSD Male Athlete Auction will go directly to Intercollegiate Athletics to fund more promotions and advertising for athletic events, in hopes to drum up more fan support from students. We all know there isn’t much fanfare going on and this is another stab at drawing a bigger crowd, so give it a chance.

“”Most of the guys were really open to [being auctioned] and thought it was a good idea,”” Scheible said. “”Some were hesitant but agreed because they wanted to help promote UCSD athletics.””

It can’t be easy being up on the auction block, but if these guys are selfless and open-minded enough to do this, you know you’ll have a nice guy when you go out on your date.

And for those who only watch water polo because they think the players are hot, this is the event for you. Go and discover the veritable plethora of eye candy in every one of our great UCSD sports teams.

So grab your wallets and march down to Porter’s Pub. If necessary, drink a couple of cold ones to loosen you up and give you the courage you need to bid on this good cause.
