The Triton golf squad competed in two tournaments in the past two weeks, the CSU San Bernardino Invitational at the PGA of Southern California course in Calimesa, Calif., on March 24 and 25, and the UC Davis Aggie Invitational at the El Macero Country Club in Davis, on March 31 and April 1.
As a team, UCSD placed seventh in a field of 10 schools at San Bernardino’s Coyote Classic, shooting rounds of 311, 305 and 312 for a total score of 928, 64 over par.
“”[PGA of Southern California] is a very difficult course, there is a lot of trouble all over,”” said UCSD head coach Mike Wydra. “”If you hit it off the fairway, you can find yourself in waist-deep rough, and the wind wasn’t helping at all.””
CSU San Marcos took first place, shooting rounds of 297, 290 and 284 for a score of 871, seven over. Western Washington followed in second with rounds of 294, 288 and 299, to give them an 881 on the day, 17 over par. Bakersfield rounded out the top three with rounds of 293, 296 and 297, to give them an 886, 22 over.
Individually, UCSD was once again led by junior Alan Scheer, who tied for 13th in the tournament. His rounds of 77, 74 and 72 gave him a 223 for the tournament, seven over par.
Sophomore Jan Godoski followed Scheer, finishing in 30th place, shooting rounds of 77, 76 and 79, to give him a 232, 16 over par. Eugene Itkin, a sophomore, was one behind Godoski, finishing in 31st place, with rounds of 77, 79 and 77 for a total of 233, 17 over par.
Sophomore Joe Dolby came in fourth for the Tritons, taking 45th place and shooting rounds of 80, 73 and 86 for a 239 at the tournament, 23 over. Junior Galen Farris rounded out the UCSD squad with a tie for 52nd, shooting 81, 80 and 86, to give him a 247, 31 over.
At the Aggie Invitational, UCSD placed ninth out of 15 teams, shooting 297, 300 and 300, to give them an 897 for the tournament, a score of 33 over par.
“”El Macero is one of the easier courses we play for the year, although the wind and cold picked up on the second day, resulting in higher scores than normal,”” Wydra said.
Western Washington tied for first place with CSU Bakersfield. Washington shot rounds of 293, 294 and 294, giving them an 881 for the tournament, 17 over par, while Bakersfield shoot 286, 301 and 294, also an 881. CSU Stanislaus took third, with rounds of 291, 294 and 298, giving them an 883, 19 over par.
Individually, Scheer took first place for UCSD again, this time finishing in second at the tournament with rounds of 75, 72 and 68, giving him a score of 215, one under par.
“”Alan is ranked 10th in our district, and 30th in the nation for Division II golfers,”” Wydra said.
Dolby took second for the Tritons and tied for 21st at the Aggie Invitational, shooting rounds of 75, 75 and 73 for a 223, seven over. Freshman Robbie Kramer took third for UCSD and tied for 38th at the tournament with rounds of 71, 81 and 76, to give him a 228, 12 over par.
Itkin and Godoski tied for fourth for UCSD, and 56th at the tournament with scores of 236, 20 over par. Itkin shot a 77, 76 and 83, while Godoski shot 76, 77 and 83.
