'Biker Boyz' isn't worth your troubles, or your money

“”Biker Boyz”” is an action-packed contemporary Western on wheels, with desperadoes who live every day on the edge … yeah, right. In reality, it’s just a two-hour music video with a horrible plot.

In the world of underground motorcycle clubs, the undefeated racer known as Smoke (Laurence Fishburne) is the undisputed “”King of Cali.”” However, a young motorcycle-racing prodigy called Kid (Derek Luke) threatens Smoke’s dominance of the set; he is determined to win Smoke’s helmet and earn the coveted title. This predictable story line is complete with the overbearing mother, the vapid “”I-will-stand-by-my-man”” girlfriend, and the unavoidable cheesy emotions. Kid’s need to prove that he is “”a man”” is not surprising either.

The cinematography is another issue that will have you walking out of the theater, wishing you’d stayed home. The camera swivels, focuses in and out, and really makes you wonder why the cameraman doesn’t permanently stay on music video sets. The film is downright gaudy; “”Biker Boyz”” would have been much easier on the eyes if the crew had used only a few techniques tastefully.

It is obvious that the director thinks Fishburne’s acting is enough to carry the whole movie. He doesn’t realize that it is impossible to ignore Luke’s inexperience in acting. It is amazing that this lead actor from “”The Antwone Fisher Story”” did not learn enough from that film to give his role in this movie any credibility. The lack of character development from the screenwriters does not exactly help his case, either. Tina, Kid’s overly exposed girlfriend (played by Meagan Good), merely acts as a sexual distraction for the bored audience. After a while, her fake breasts even start to look real (or maybe it’s just the camera making you light-headed). It is surprising that Fishburne, who has acted in such fantastic films as “”Apocalypse Now,”” even considered being associated with this film.

Overall, “”Biker Boyz”” is not worth seeing unless you are completely bored out of your mind and only want to be disappointed further. With appalling acting, a poor plot and visuals that give you a headache, it is doubtful that anyone other than devoted biker fans will pay to see this movie. If you’re desperately in need of an adrenaline rush and hot actors, just rent “”The Fast and the Furious.””
