    Groundbreaking of the Pawka Memorial Green

    Scripps Institute of Oceanography will be holding the groundbreaking ceremony of the Steven Sitter Pawka Memorial Green on July 16 at 9 a.m. The new park will be located between Ritter and Vaughan Halls and will overlook the Pacific Ocean to the west.

    Steven Pawka graduated from Revelle College in 1971 with an undergraduate degree in physics. In 1982, he completed his doctorate in oceanography at Scripps after a stint as a researcher at the Naval Electronics Lab in Point Loma. The park has been endowed by his parents Edward and Nancy Pawka.

    The groundbreaking celebration is open to the public and Professor Robert Guza, Pawka’s former advisor at Scripps, will briefly address the crowd. Refreshments will be served.

    Lecture: UCSD Economics Roundtable

    San Diego venture capitalist Bill Stensrud will address the question, “”Is there any adventure left in venture capital?”” at the breakfast meeting of the UCSD Economics Roundtable on July 18 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

    Stensrud, a general partner at Enterprise Partners, is known through the investment industry as a leader with a talent for identifying emerging markets in technology and telecommunication sectors.

    Lecture: PubMed

    The Biomedical library is sponsoring PubMed, an introductory class allowing attendees the opportunity to learn how to search the Medline archive using the National Library of Medicine’s state-of-the-art PubMed interface, providing users the most up to date biomedical literature.

    The event will be held at CLICS library in Revelle College on July 18 at 3:00 p.m. Admission to the event is free for UCSD staff, students and faculty and costs $30 for non-affiliates.

    Paper Theatre Festival

    The Arts Libraries at UCSD will present the Paper Theatre Festival each Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Miniature replicas of famous theaters in Denmark, England, France and Spain will be used to house short presentations of operas, ballets, Shakespearean plays and Hans Christian Andersen stories.

    Each performance features live music and dramatic readings. After every show, visitors are given the opportunity to work on the next theater’s construction.
