MEN’S RUGBY
In a tug-of-war match, the UCSD men’s rugby team triumphed over the UCSB Guachos in its league opener.
After 34 minutes of tough defense on both sides, the Guachos received a penalty kick to give them a 3-0 lead. As the Triton defense wore down toward the end of the half, UCSB took advantage with another penalty kick and finished the first period with a 8-0 lead.
UCSB began the second half with another attack, but the refreshed UCSD defense stopped it cold, taking advantage of the Guachos’ ball-handling errors.
After Triton Ben Kanner intercepted a UCSB pass, he notched an assist after passing the ball to Doug Gardner, who scored UCSD’s first goal of the season. Nate Miller secured the point to put the Tritons within a point of the Guachos at 7-8.
UCSD then capitalized on its momentum and quickly converted a UCSB penalty to grab the lead 10-8. For the rest of the game, the defense shut out the Gaucho offense to secure its first league victory.
