As the people who run the clockwork of campus transportation, shuttle drivers are the figures with whom we rarely converse, but are an essential part of student life. Ted Jacobo, who currently runs the Mesa route and has been working as a driver for 12 years, recounts his experience, from the privilege of not being obligated to check ID’s, to the occasional friendships that come out of the brief encounters.

New Mobile App Tells Users When to Cross the Border

These days, a 30-mile drive to cross the Mexican border can easily turn into a several-hour long ordeal. Fortunately, a team of students from UCSD’s computer science and engineering department have developed an iPhone app to help border crossers make informed choices about when and where to cross over — thereby avoiding frustrating waits in heavy traffic at popular crossing points. The app was released in the Apple App store on iTunes on Oct. 26.

Over the past decade, undergraduate admission rates have fallen across the country. And while a report released by the Registrar’s Office on Oct. 23 may suggest that UCSD is bucking the trend with a slightly higher acceptance rate for 2012-13 (37.7 percent), the rankings-obsessed should relax and remember that we are still far more selective than we were in 2000, when we had an admission rate of 55.7 percent.
