Between Blur in 1992 to Kendrick Lamar in 2013, UC San Diego’s Sun God Festival lineup has always featured a wide variety of artists. Since its inception in 1983, student speculation about who will perform at the annual Spring Quarter festival has become somewhat of a sport. High hopes and conflicting desires make the lineup announcement rife with discourse. This year’s performances were sequentially revealed on the Associated Students Concerts & Events Instagram page, garnering mixed opinions from students. In this episode of Trolley Takes, The UCSD Guardian’s Features section hopped on the Blue Line trolley on Wednesday to ask students about their opinions on this year’s Sun God lineup. Here are their takes:
“I think the Sun God lineup is like, really good, and I’m looking forward to listening to the artists, especially like Dominic Fike and Mike Sherm. I haven’t really heard of the other two.” — Avin, first-year student.
“I think there are not enough women. There’s no women at all. It’s all men. What’s up with that? Last year, there was only one woman on the lineup. I would like to see up-and-coming female artists on the lineup, just like last year. Like, we got Slayyyter, and now she’s huge.” — Vari, fourth-year student.
“Honestly, I feel like we got a pretty solid lineup. [I’m] kinda excited about Mike Sherm; I feel like that’s a pretty good choice. I feel like Dominic Fike is also pretty good, so it’s a solid lineup. Any songs for [Dominic Fike], I’ve heard them casually, so I couldn’t give you exact names, but overall, I like the vibe of his stuff.” — Ciho, third-year student.
“To be honest, I only know, like, one of the artists — the headliner, Dominic Fike — so I’m actually really excited about that. Both me and my roommate both really like his music, so we’re really happy they got someone really good this year. I’m not super active on social media right now; that’s pretty much the only place I know where they were reporting [other acts]. I haven’t stayed up to date as much as I wanted to, but I’m still going to go for the whole time and enjoy it. I like music; I like anything.” — Chandra, fourth-year student.
“I love Dominic Fike. I’ve been listening to him for 10 years, so, best pick.” — Shazi, third-year student.
“I think it’s fun. I don’t know any of the artists though.” — Amberly, third-year student.
