From being known as one the nerdiest schools in California to being the head graveyard keeper for the socially dead, UC San Diego’s gloomy stereotypes cast a shadow over its reputation. However, contrary to popular belief, many students disagree with these widespread narratives. In this episode of Trolley Takes, The UCSD Guardian hopped on the Blue Line and asked the community for a UCSD stereotype that they disagreed with. These are their defenses:
“I feel like we are not 100 percent socially dead; I am literally hosting a party tonight.” — Julia, third-year student.
“I think a stereotype is that Revelle sucks, and the housing sucks, and just telling people you are in Revelle is like telling people your grandma died; because I kind of even like Revelle, and I am sorry, I like the Fleets. I kind of think it’s better than Sixth. … Hot take.” — Sam, second-year student.
“I disagree that the humanities program is bad; I think it’s actually pretty decent for the most part at least. I think that stereotype is wrong.” — Arsaces, fourth-year student.
“I disagree that UC San Diego is not good at sports. We have an amazing basketball team, and sure, we didn’t have [many] sports before, but we are striving and changing, and who knows what is going to happen?” — Justina, administrative assistant at the UCSD Institute of Engineering in Medicine.
“UCSD is actually a really good school for like humanities, and I know some people who have transferred in specifically for the poli-sci program over UCLA. … UCSD can also be like a social science or a humanities school, in addition to a STEM school.” — Jai, second-year student.
“UCSD is not socially dead. I have a good time. … I just go out to Pacific beach, and if you have a good group of girlfriends, you can have a really fun time.” — Morgan, fourth-year student.
“UCSD has the best dining hall food because we have this concept of choice, so we can order what we want instead of the slop that they feed us, which is especially helpful for vegetarians because it means we have options.” — Bhagya, first-year student.

would love to see more student interactions like this in the future!
