Quentin Tarantino has never been one for simplicity and minimalism. After a brief hiatus, Tarantino returned in October with a bang, literally. So ridiculously over-the-top and almost comical, “Kill Bill Vol. 1” jumped off of the screen and smacked viewers in the face. Audiences were bombarded with two hours of sensory overload. As trite as it sounds, “Kill Bill” was definitely one hardcore movie, and everyone knew that Uma Thurman and Lucy Liu were girls you didn’t want to piss off.
This homage to Hong Kong kung fu flicks, B-grade action films and manga comics delighted audiences everywhere. Violent? Yes, it’s filled with God-knows-how-many amputations. Gory? Yes, “Kill Bill” would put your local blood bank to shame. Cheesy one-liners? Yes, but only Tarantino can really get away with stuff like that. Ballsy? Most definitely. After all, it’s not everyday you see a 30-something white woman single-handedly fight off 88 Yakuza members.
