Despite the school boasting 24 Division I teams, when someone mentions UC San Diego, sports culture is never the first thing that comes to mind. While the men’s and women’s basketball’s conference championship wins and subsequent appearances in March Madness last year certainly helped pique student interest, most students are still dissatisfied with or unaware of the many sports teams at UCSD. In the third episode of Trolley Takes, The UCSD Guardian hopped on the Blue Line trolley and asked students about their UCSD Athletics hot takes. These are their responses:
“The school needs to stop promoting the men’s basketball team and start promoting the women. I’ve gone to the men’s basketball game. They keep losing, and the women keep winning. So, I went on the trolley — the men are on the trolley — where’s the women? They’re the ones winning; get them on the trolley!” — Emma, first-year student.
“I think UCSD needs a football team.” — Zubin, first-year student.
“This school ought to have a football team. Maybe we should take some of the money given to other ventures at this school and use it to put a football team on this campus.” — Elwood, second-year student.
“We think that SDSU has a better football [team] than UCSD. Go Aztecs!” — Rachel, third-year student.
“I feel like, as a student here, it shouldn’t be that hard to figure out, like, what the next game is going to be. I feel like we need to go back to, you know, kind of like high school a little bit in the sense that we should take more pride in our sports, and we should broadcast ahead of time. … And I feel like if more teams kind of just publicly announce, like, when they’re going to play, I feel like more students would be more willing to support instead of us having to search and go the extra mile to figure out, like, what’s going on in our campus.” — Lalis, third-year student.
“Alex Chaikin is a better 3-point shooter than Tyler McGhie.” — Baron, second-year student.
“We should have more sports events near the other side of the school because I’m in Revelle, and it’s a pain to walk to the other side.” — Alan, first-year student.
“More of the pools, especially the indoor ones, should be open for recreational use.” — Kaylie, second-year student.
