Whoever came up with spring cleaning was onto something — there’s nothing like a fresh start after the horrors of Winter Quarter finals. Here are a few ideas to get you in the spring spirit and enjoy your hard-earned break!
Venture into the great outdoors on a roadtrip with your friends
Nothing is better than soaking up the sunlight and getting away from campus with the people you love. After 10 weeks of being cooped up in stuffy lecture halls and dorm rooms the size of someone’s walk-in closet, it’s completely normal to start feeling antsy. For a refreshing getaway, gather some friends, pack your bags, and head out on a roadtrip! Bring along anything to help you destress, like your favorite book, a nice hammock, a musical instrument — as long as it is portable — and especially your favorite person. It doesn’t need to be far, expensive, or complicated; simply pack tents, sleeping bags, a cooler full of your favorite snacks and drinks, and book an outdoor destination that speaks to you — like Palomar Mountain or Lake Cuyamaca — and begin your blue light detox.
Try restaurant or cafe hopping
Visiting home for the spring break? Look up some of your local restaurants or cafes — whichever fits your springtime vibe best — and map out a plan to hit as many as you can in a day. Try new items and springtime flavors — like lavender, strawberry, or lemon — to find your next go-to order or visit at different times of day to figure out which vibes you like most. Invite your hometown day-one or call a friend you haven’t talked to in a long time while you’re there. This is also a perfect moment to journal about your quarterly goals and reflect on how the school year is going. Still in San Diego for spring break? Host a slumber party
For those going home to 16 inches of snow and a frostbite warning, staying inside might be the move. Fret not, as you can still celebrate spring in the great indoors. A sleepover is a lot more fun when you don’t have to worry about that one roommate who insists on turning the lights off at 8 p.m. Slumber parties are full of endless possibilities, from dancing to Kesha’s “TiK ToK” on “Just Dance 2” to preparing post-quarter slideshow recaps. Reboot your nervous system for the new quarter by spending a few hours with your friends playing “Super Smash Bros.,” debriefing winter situationships, or complaining about the annoying teaching assistants you’re happy to leave behind!
Enjoy the simple things
Going back home, sleeping in, and enjoying home-cooked meals feels like a return to the carefree days of childhood. Between exams, jobs, and clubs, this is the perfect opportunity to recharge your youthful battery. Bring your friends over and have a water balloon fight while running through sprinkler water in your front yard. Invite your neighbors to your local park for a potluck, complete with kite-flying and an Easter egg hunt. Pull out that old kiddie pool you thought your parents threw away and dip your toes in the water while you reread your favorite YA novels from middle school — or your favorite AO3 fanfiction. Enjoy the little things that were once routine and reconnect with the parts of yourself you may have forgotten in the hustle and bustle of university life.
It’s about time for you to get a good refuel before Spring Quarter begins. Take a break to touch some grass, hang out with the longtime friends you’ve been missing, or step back into your youth for a moment. Use any of these ideas to recharge your battery — by yourself or with the people you love — and you’re sure to create a spring break you’ll cherish forever.
