KSDT Radio gives special presentation
KSDT Radio representatives are seeking opportunities for collaboration and engagement with Associated Students to broaden its reach. Kevin Colorado, KSDT’s general manager, and Diego Dono, KDST’s office manager, gave a special presentation about the organization’s importance as a creative and cultural hub on UC San Diego’s campus.
Colorado and Dono spoke about the various resources and opportunities the radio station offers to students, such as a recording studio, live sound for events, and DJ broadcasting slots. They expressed their desire for greater visibility in student life and the campus community.
UCSA president visits
President of the University of California Student Association Aditi Hariharan presented on the organization’s mission, current campaign goals, and broader advocacy platform to the A.S. Senate.
UCSA brings students from across the nine undergraduate UC campuses to advocate for policy changes in higher education. Current President Hariharan is a UC Davis student.
UCSA determines its campaign goals based on a systemwide student survey distributed at the end of Spring Quarter. Its current focuses include reducing nontuition costs — such as textbooks and transportation — campus compliance with the 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and advocacy for federal research funding. UCSA is also working to increase student representation on the UC Board of Regents from one voting student regent and one nonvoting regent-designate to two of each position.
UCSA is also advocating against recent time, place, and manner policies that Hariharan said restrict students’ freedom of speech. Its platform further includes protecting diversity programs and initiatives, implementing a stronger ethical investing policy, and improving police accountability board procedures.
Hariharan said that all UC campuses are technically “sanctuary campuses,” but the label means little in its current enforcement. UCSA is also working to support undocumented, international, and mixed-status students by ensuring campuses’ timely and legitimate compliance with state Senate Bill 98, under which the state requests UC schools to notify their communities when immigration agents conduct enforcement activity on their campuses. UCSD complies with SB 98 via email notifications.
AS President William Simpson shares updates
A.S. President William Simpson gave several updates before leaving the meeting early for an interview with The UCSD Guardian.
Simpson shared that he recently met with an unnamed student advocating for the installation of bidets in restrooms on campus, noting that some Muslim students have requested this change before. Simpson is currently considering placing bidets in Price Center near the new Contemplation Lounge, in Fan-Fan, or in Tahini.
After a recent severe scooter accident involving a student-athlete sparked concerns about micromobility vehicle safety, Simpson said he joined a micromobility safety committee. Simpson met with Josh Kavanagh, assistant vice chancellor of Transportation and Activation, to discuss plans for how to increase helmet usage on campus.
Simpson also met with the Blind Snakes Co-operative — a disability rights student organization — and announced that he will be endorsing the implementation of a disability studies minor.
Simpson ended by addressing recent reports of the UCSD police department’s collaboration with Border Patrol’s operations. Simpson said that he and the president of the Graduate and Professional Student Association are taking this information “very seriously” and that it is on the agenda for their next meeting with the chancellor.
