AS approves 6 new judicial board members
The Associated Student Senate voted six new judicial board members into office, filling longstanding vacancies. The judicial board, which is composed of one chief justice and six associate justices, oversee that A.S. members adhere to the A.S. constitution and “shall establish, maintain, and propose changes to the Judicial Rules.”
Hadia El Hallou, Cameron Golbahary, Tyler Hijirida, Maryam Ismail, Daniel Negrete, and Shaina Sanchez, the six candidates, each gave a short speech about why they wanted to be judicial board members.
Candidates answered questions from the A.S. panel about how they would handle conflict, which aspects of the A.S. constitution they agreed and disagreed with, and what changes to the constitution they hoped to make.
A.S. senators approved all six candidates with the following voting records: 25-1-2 for El Hallou, 23-1-3 for Golbahary, 21-1-0 for Hijirida, 22-5-0 for Ismail, 27-1-0 for Negrete, 22-0-2 for Sanchez.
CALPIRG quarterly update presentation
UC San Diego’s California Public Interest Research Group is funded through a voluntary quarterly student fee. Representatives from the group, Erin Carroll, Zach Funk, Natalia Lara, and Tonantzin Orozco, presented on the organization’s recent funding instability during its quarterly update at the beginning of the Wednesday, Jan. 7, meeting.
Representatives called for A.S. members and students to donate in Winter Quarter to support its 2026 campaigns, including Waste is Out of Fashion, Protect Our Oceans, Hunger and the Homeless, and Save the Bees.
The Waste is Out of Fashion campaign seeks to “stop fashion companies’ wasteful practice of destroying unsold clothing.” Hunger and Homelessness organizes direct service, fundraising events, and political advocacy to fight food and housing insecurity. Protect Our Oceans and Save the Bees are both campaigns that work to protect the environment.
