On your own and away from home for the first time, we all know how deeply isolating college can be. As we return from winter break, this solitude can feel more overwhelming than ever. In times of loneliness, I ground myself with my support system: my family friends who make San Diego home away from home.
Classic artists like Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez rotate with contemporary indie bands like Still Woozy and Beach House to soundtrack my family friends’ home. I’ve come to associate the layers of these soothing melodies with our laughter and conversation. “Wax & Wane” by Peach Pit is the most recent addition to our medley of songs.
The track features acoustic guitar, lead singer Neil Smith’s gentle vocals, and an entrancing melodic structure. Staying true to the song’s title, Peach Pit’s extended notes wane and wax, reminding me to appreciate the simple moments and blessings in my life.
The Winter Quarter slump is extremely real. When you find yourself feeling down during these long weeks, lean into your safe aural spaces.
