As we head into the final stretch of the quarter, most of us are itching to return home for our short Thanksgiving break. “Ode To My Family,” the second single from The Cranberries’ 1994 album “No Need To Argue,” encapsulates this longing in its whimsical, nostalgic vocals.
As light violin lilts in the background, The Cranberries return to their Irish folk roots in this sentimental ballad. Lead singer and writer, Dolores O’Riordan, wrote and dedicated this song to their homeland while the band was touring in America. The emotion in her voice is palpable: Her airy, wavering intonations carry the weight of the pull toward her home.
Accompanied by the soft strumming of a single guitar, O’Riordan’s straightforward lyrics reminisce on her carefree childhood: “‘Cause we were raised / To see life as fun and take it as we can.” She reminds us to cherish pieces of our upbringing and to look back with gratitude for the people who molded us.
No matter who you’re spending the upcoming break with — suitemates, close friends, or family — “Ode To My Family” channels a wistfulness for proximity to loved ones, reminding us to appreciate our time together.

Your descriptive words make me feel like I am sitting in the Cranberrie’s native Irish countryside with Irish fairies dancing around me to this song.
