Dear Editor,

Today, May 10, marks the 42nd anniversary of George Winne’s self-immolation to protest the American war in Southeast Asia.  Winne, a UCSD undergraduate who was due to begin his graduate studies in the Department of History in Fall, was inspired by Buddhist monks who set themselves on fire to protest corrupt government practices in South Vietnam.  The sign next to his body read: “In God’s name, stop this war.”
