Just when you thought emo was dead, Sactown-based fivesome Self Against Pity – er, City – crawled out of the depths of MySpace with just enough cheesy side-swiped bangs and whiny, drawn-out vocals to let them serve as a lingering reminder of last year’s My Chemical Romance megaflop.
The brainchild of Rushmore Records, the band formed in 2004 in the wake of emo’s heyday (if it ever had one), and managed to release full-length album Telling Secrets to Strangers earlier this year.
Although it’s not entirely City’s fault that they end up catering (mostly) to forlorn preteens, obnoxious lyrics like “”Overrated boys and attention-starved girls/ A little curious, a little insecure”” make it hard to give them even courteous respect – unless it comes in the form of a pacifier.
Thankfully, though, City is playing during the day, meaning you’re left with plenty of free time to drink, smoke and/or ingest other illicit substances to prepare for the nighttime festivities. But if you’re already drunk enough and willing to dip your feet into a bottomless pool of crybaby angst, Self Against City’s set could prove mildly humorous. Just be sure to save your tears for the sheer joy you’ll feel when T.I. finally takes the fucking stage.
