“The Labyrinth of Desire” – Nov. 16-Nov. 26, 7 p.m. – Sheila & Hughes Potiker Theatre, $10
If anyone knew of the hellish pull that is desire, it had to be Spanish playwright Lope de Vega, a notorious bastard-bearer who continued a spree of love affairs even when his duties as a priest forbade it. UCSD grads tackle Vega’s 17th-century dramatics under the direction of Gerardo J. Ruiz, back from Broadway to teach the department a thing or two. (SW)
red fish blue fish – Nov. 19, Mandeville Auditorium, FREE
Its name is a mystery (maybe another Dr. Seuss memorium?) but its music promises to be enlightening. UCSD’s resident percussion ensemble celebrates its 10th anniversary and new CD release with a concert featuring compostions by Xenakis, Jon Cage, James Tenney and graduate student Charlie Wilmoth. “Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus” – Opens Nov. 17, Landmark Hillcrest
What better opening image than a nudist colony to begin the biopic of Diane Arbus, the mid-century voyeur who lovingly photographed the weird and grotesque. “Fur” ironically turns the camera lens back toward the photographer and follows her mental breakdown through the slow transformation of her subjects from commercial fashion to bizarre bodies.
