Regents Greenlight Transfer Housing

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox’s goal of guaranteed housing for all undergraduates took a step forward last week after the UC Board of Regents voted to give $5 million in initial funding for a transfer-student complex.

The North Campus housing project, which will total $120 million and house 1,000 students, will use the money to draw up initial floor plans and study the housing’s impact on the La Jolla environment.

“Besides the architectural and engineering services, the planning monies also cover the costs for project oversight, administration, environmental review and documentation, geotechnical investigation [and] Coastal Commission approval,” Assistant Vice Chancellor of Design and Construction Boone Hellman said.

At the meeting, regents still questioned the university’s fiscal responsibility, with Regent Judith Hopkinson calling the amount spent on initial plans “way out of line.” The money moves the university toward completing a task that has been on Fox’s priority list since her arrival.

“On-campus housing is one of the most effective means of integrating students into the academic and social life of the campus,” Director of University Outreach Pat JaCoby said. “Living on campus contributes positively to student satisfaction, retention and academic success.”

The project first entered its planning phase in late 2000, and will now begin work on a proposal for final approval from the regents. The university is still looking for a construction firm, but plans to open the building for student occupancy during the summer of 2009.

Students at the board meeting lobbied the regents to approve the initial funding for the project.

“Transfer students play a vital role in our community here at UCSD,” John Muir College Council Chair Neil Spears told the regents last week. “Transfer students seem to have a more varied life experiences than nontransfers, which makes them important sources of advice and ideas.”
