“”Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room”” – On DVD now
When former Enron CEO Jeff Skilling applied to Harvard Business School, a professor asked him, “Are you smart?” He replied, “I’m fucking smart.” Once you think you have heard everything about the notorious corporate criminals, the scathing documentary, “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” gives you a shocking look at the white-collar crime of the century. The film chronicles how each chapter of the scandal unfolded. Ken “Kenny Boy” Lay and Jeff Skilling devise a way to forge profits through deregulation. Enron execs fleece California with help from their close connections to the Bush administration. And you know the rest … Californians now have the star of “Jingle All the Way”as their governor.
Nothing is more hilarious and infuriating than the conference-call recordings between traders. One trader jeered over the California wildfires, gleefully yelling “Burn, baby, burn!” Hopefully, they will. (CC)
“”The Times They Are A Changin’”” – Now through March 25
San Diego may occasionally get a bad rap for a “lack of culture,” but anyone who believes that hasn’t frequented its theaters, a haven of new plays that often become critical successes. The Old Globe’s latest melds the worlds of two acknowledged geniuses: famed choreographer Twyla Tharp and general American legend Bob “Bobby” Dylan. The Tony-award winning choreographer directs “The Times They Are A Changin’,” a musical based on a sampling of Dylan’s music. In positively Dylan style, the show is about a threadbare circus revue that remains existentially stationary, led by Captain Arab (pronounced ay-rab) and his malcontent son, Coyote, who longs for the world outside the big top. Here Dylan’s lysergic dreams manifest into a dismal world that, much like his music, often questions the pursuits of humanity, but never answers them and always entertains. Tickets are $19 for students. (CBN)
