Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” has been one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, not only because it boasts some of Hollywood’s hottest international talent, including Eric Bana (“Troy”) and Daniel Craig (yes, the new 007), but also because it looks like the director’s riskiest move in years. The film, which chronicles the aftermath of the Palestinian assassinations during the 1976 Olympic games, has drawn criticism from both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The film reportedly paints a mixed portrait of the squad of Mossad operatives who were assigned to avenge the killings of the Israeli athletes in Munich. Bana’s character is rumored to be a Mossad agent with a crisis of conscience who abandons his mission. However, the director was so concerned about the tone of the film, he even enlisted the help of Tony Kushner (“Angels in America”) to rewrite the script and consulted with Bill Clinton about the accuracy of the movie. Despite the controversy, “Munich” may turn out to be a comeback for the prolific director who hasn’t made a noteworthy film since 1998’s “Saving Private Ryan.” If “War of the Worlds” taught Spielberg anything, it’s that a little media attention can go a long way at the box office.
