The Guardian enthusiastically endorses David Goodwin for the position of A.S. comissioner of services and enterprises. Goodwin currently boasts two years of well-rounded A.S. Council experience, serving as Eleanor Roosevelt College freshman senator, Roosevelt College Council chair and a unanimously approved member of the services and enterprises student staff. Goodwin also participates in the housing and dining advisory committee.
Goodwin seems to bring several highly attractive and unique ideas to the table, as well as an ability to follow through on those plans.
For example, Goodwin would like to bring meal points to the Grove Cafe and has already been formulating a prescription for such a change in conjunction with the necessary members of the administration.
Also, Goodwin has promised to seek ways to place advertisements in the back of A.S. Lecture Notes and readers to boost revenues generated by these student services. He then plans to put this money toward expanding Triton Taxi services to Tijuana on Wednesday nights.
To further increase these revenues, Goodwin wants to lobby the college administrations to encourage them to utilize A.S. Soft Reserves’ reader services for their core general education courses, such as Dimensions of Culture and Making of the Modern World. This, he argues, will further supplement the amount of money being produced by Soft Reserves, thus increasing the A.S. Council’s financial autonomy and its revenue pool. Establishing off-campus vendors that accept Triton Plus is another worthy goal that Goodwin has promised to research if elected for a year of service.
Another idea that Goodwin has campaigned on is that of placing A.S. Lecture Notes online, which would decrease the overall cost of providing this service to students and would pass such revenue to students. Goodwin has already been communicating with a private contractor that can faciliate an online transition. He also supports the idea of looking into establishing a confidential emergency technician service whereby students could call for medical assistance without fearing expulsion from campus housing due to alcohol violations.
Overall, Goodwin finds that A.S. services and enterprises aren’t currently as competitive as they could be, and therefore he seeks to sharpen and fine-tune their ability to provide such services to increase their revenues. With an obvious knowledge of the issues that this office deals with and a firm grasp of changes students could benefit from, Goodwin clearly emerges as the best-qualified candidate for the position.
