Dancesport
The UCSD Dancesport team hosted its annual Dance by the Shores competition last weekend, which is one of the largest amateur competitions on the West Coast for ballroom dancers.
In the couples dance competition, UCSD’s Janelle Bouey and Jonathon Marion dominated, taking home 14 first-place finishes, three second-place finishes, and three fourth-place finishes in both Pre-Championship and Championship competitions. UCSD Dancesport, as a team, took first place in the competition dance category, topping second-place University of Southern California.
Men’s Ultimate
The men’s ultimate disc team traveled to compete in the Stanford Invitational last weekend and got mixed results, going 2-3 over the two-day tournament.
UCSD’s Squids got off to a rocky start, losing to UC Santa Barbara due to unpreparedness and shaky play.
In its second game against the No. 2 seeded University of Oregon, UCSD’s solid offense took Oregon into overtime before losing on Oregon’s hail- mary fling at the last second.
In the third game UCSD easily handled Tufts University and continued its momentum with another win against the University of British Columbia.
That was as far as UCSD would go; the Squids lost to defending national champion Carleton College. UCSD led at one point but sloppy play spelled defeat for the Squids.
Women’s Rugby
Women’s rugby shut out UC Santa Barbara and Occidental College last weekend to up their perfect record to 7-0.
UCSD traveled March 2 to face the former No. 1 Southern California team, UC Santa Barbara. The game went down to the last minute until Kristin Hartos nailed a clutch conversion to put UCSD up 3-0 and hand UCSB the loss.
The next day’s match against Occidental had a different tone, as UCSD jumped ahead early and secured the 43-0 rout with a strong line defense.
With its two victories last weekend, the No. 1 ranked UCSD women’s rugby team secured a place in the nationals in Florida.
Equestrian
The equestrian team had its final tournament of the season last weekend. Riders dominated the show and also qualified for regionals.
In the Open Division team captain Lisa Calvino grabbed second in fences competition, while newcomer Kate McComas took second in the flat event both Saturday and Sunday.
Outstanding performances will send captain Calvino along with Zoe Jarocki to regionals.
