UCSD CLUB SPORTS

    Lacrosse

The UCSD lacrosse team held its annual Fall Ball Tournament last weekend, which featured several local club teams. It proved to be a roller coaster weekend for the host team.

UCSD opened with a match against San Diego Club, which features players who have experience in Eastern conference Division I teams. UCSD kept the match close and tied the game at six with just 40 seconds to go in the game. The game ended in a 6-6 tie.

The host team rebounded with wins over San Diego State University and University of San Diego, winning 6-5 and 8-6, respectively.

The two wins set up a rematch against San Diego Club in the championship game. San Diego Club jumped out to a 7-0 halftime lead and cruised to an eventual 7-3 victory.

UCSD took some positives from the tournament. Sophomore goalie Wade Tam was strong in the four matches, while the team proved that it could play competitively against some of the stronger club teams in the area.

    Rugby

The San Diego Round Robin Rugby Tournament, held Nov. 3, proved to be a disappointing day for UCSD’s rugby team. The team dropped four tough matches to come away from the event winless.

The first match was against Point Loma Nazarene University, which jumped all over UCSD and took the 18-10 win in the opening game.

UCSD squared off against University of San Diego in the second match. UCSD held USD scoreless in the first half but failed to score any points of its own. USD came out with 15 unanswered points in the second half en route to a 15-7 win.

The third match against San Diego State was ugly for UCSD. SDSU pounded UCSD into submission with a convincing 55-5 thrashing.

UCSD looked poised for its first win of the day in the final match against USD’s second team by taking a 21-12 lead with just minutes to go in the game. UCSD let up and allowed USD to score twice in three minutes to hand UCSD the heartbreaking 22-21 loss.

    Ice Hockey

The UCSD ice hockey team survived a bruising 7-4 victory over UC Berkeley on Friday night to thrash SDSU 10-2 on Saturday night.

The opening game was marked by numerous penalties and hard hits. UCSD took a commanding 5-1 lead into the final period and had to hold off a late UC Berkeley surge for the victory. Keith Davis, Chris Davis, Eliot Mendelsohn and O.J. Alcaraz each contributed to UCSD’s score. Goalie Sean Fine played a solid game for UCSD.

UCSD took to the road on Saturday night to do battle against SDSU. It was the first meeting of the two teams since the ’98-’99 season.

Keith and Kevin Davis each had hat tricks in the lopsided win over SDSU.

    Equestrian

The UCSD equestrian team had its first showing of the season at UC Davis on Nov. 4.

Led by new coach Lynne Bollinger, UCSD took home several awards from the competition.

In the novice division, Morgan Messing took second place in the Novice Flat, an event in which all the riders are in the arena at once and execute three gaits: walk, trot and canter.

Marce Evans and Erica Gross took first and second place, respectively, in Novice fences, an event in which a rider navigates a course of eight to 10 fences.

Other notable showings included team captain Lisa Calvino, who finished second in Open Fences, and Meredith Tosta, who finished first in Intermediate Flat. Sandy Johnson added a first place prize in the Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter.

The performances were good enough to earn the team second place overall.
