The National Academy of Sciences has awarded Charles Cox, a Scripps Institution of Oceanography professor emeritus, with the Alexander Agassiz Medal.
Cox will receive the medal and his $15,000 prize during the National Academy of Sciences annual meeting April 3 in Washington, D.C.
Cox is being awarded for his studies of oceanic waves and their microstructure, mixing and electromagnetic fields.
The Agassiz Medal is given every three years for original contributions to the science of oceanography and was established by a gift from John Murray in 1913.
Cox’s research has focused on measuring the fine-scale fluctuations in temperature and salinity within ocean water due to turbulence.
In addition to this most recent honor, Cox has also been a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1996.
