Amy Shark’s “I Said Hi” is a message for anyone who didn’t think she would succeed in the music industry — it’s a passive-aggressive “so there.” I’ve come to interpret this song as a self-confidence mantra. I listen to it to get pumped up, whether it’s the morning before a triathlon race or I’m cruising in a car with the windows down.
The song begins with the crisp strumming of an electric guitar. As she transitions into the chorus, Shark’s voice is relaxed: “Tell ‘em all I said, ‘Hi, have a nice day / I’ll be just fine, don’t worry ‘bout me.’” I can almost hear Shark’s shrug during the laid-back delivery of these lines. Instead of getting defensive, Shark simply tells those who dismissed her — the “‘em” she refers to — “Hi.” Shark doesn’t care about anyone’s opinions: She writes for herself, and anyone who enjoys her music can come along for the ride.
When facing resistance, take a shot of self-assurance by listening to Shark’s lead single and just say, “Hi.”
