UC San Diego track and field will participate in the final weekend of the Big West track and field championships in Long Beach from May 15 to May 16. During last year’s championship, the Tritons managed to take home three wins in their first year of Division-I postseason eligibility. Junior Tamara Aimufia became the women’s long jump champion, senior thrower Feyi Olukanni took first in women’s shot put, and UCSD took gold in the women’s 4×400-meter relay. Six Tritons went on to represent UCSD at the NCAA West Regional championships.
The Tritons have had a successful season so far, consistently setting new school records — including eight at the Battle Born Classic back in February during the indoor track season. Currently, 10 Tritons hold a top-three spot on the Big West leaderboard, and two of them are at the top of the Big West: graduate student Sylvana Northrop is ranked first in the women’s 5000, and graduate student Miles Bennett is first in high jump.
During the first weekend of the Big West Championship — the multievent race portion — senior thrower Sam Betz represented UCSD in the decathlon at Anteater Stadium in Irvine and finished in seventh place.
With the remainder of the events set for next weekend, UCSD looks to repeat its individual champions and send more athletes to the NCAA regional meet, which will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas, from May 27 to May 30.
