The question “What are you doing after graduation?” seems to arise in every conversation I have these days. Everytime, I find myself flustered, unable to come up with a coherent answer.
As the days, weeks, and quarters tick by, I ponder this question more and more, but I find comfort in the fact that I’m not alone in my anxiety. The song “Out There” by Lomelda — the musical project of singer Hannah Read — speaks to this sense of uncertainty by exploring the tension between the past and the future.
Gentle instrumentation and soft vocals lure us in as Read lyrically treads the bittersweet transition from childhood to adulthood. The song opens with a distant memory and ends with the refrain “I don’t know what’s out there,” alluding to the subtle loss of leaving the old and entering the new. Read imbues a melancholic tone throughout the song, but also expresses an openness as she waits “for what’s out there.”
In modeling the vulnerability of one individual, Read reflects the collective. This sense of relatability culminates in a listening experience that compels listeners to pause and take a breath. Daunting as the future may seem, let this song remind you that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be — venturing into the unknown — and that you’re not alone.
