UC San Diego Housing Dining Hospitality and John Muir College announced major renovations to their dining service locations on Feb. 17. Starting March 13, Pines and Roots will temporarily close until a planned reopening in Fall 2026. Middle of Muir Cafe will not be in operation for 10 days starting on March 20, and then will temporarily relocate to the recently-closed John’s Market and reopen with Pines and Roots.
Muir dining hall services will not be offered during the renovations. On its website, HDH notes some alternatives.
“Extended hours and expanded platform offerings (including some of your favorite menu items from Pines) will be available at Restaurants at Sixth and 64 Degrees, with breakfast service at The Rooftop as well,” the website reads.
The remodeling will not only affect Pines’ and Roots’ facilities, but also their offerings.
“Come Fall 2026, Pines and Roots are getting fresh, new looks with flavors to match … with improved building infrastructure, expanded seating capacity, more natural light and new culinary concepts,” the website reads.
John’s Market closed permanently on March 6. Starting March 30, M.O.M’s Cafe will operate from John’s until the renovations to Pines and Roots are completed. The Mariposa Room inside the Tamarack Apartments will be used as an extension of the cafe’s seating area. This room is normally utilized as a conference and lecture room.
M.O.M’s Cafe will not be undergoing any renovations and will not look different when it reopens in Fall 2026.
