Senior Sendoff-Donovan Perez Schipper

One of COVID’s many impacts was that sports crawled to a halt across the world. In the UC San Diego environment without a booming sports culture, I was skeptical of how much there would be to cover. When I joined, everything was still online, and I didn’t actually get to cover my first sports game in person for more than half a year.
When I did end up going to my first game, I knew I was in the right place. Not that online coverage isn’t worth it, but the full experience of being a sports writer is attending the game with friends and conducting interviews afterward. I was so nervous my first time interviewing the volleyball coach, but when it turned out well, a great feeling of pride ensued.
It is hard to know whether or not you are doing a good job in this role, but after praise from my team and from a member of the athletics staff, I feel confident that I advanced this section. I leave my position in capable hands, and I am so excited to see what is next for sports at UCSD and for The UCSD Guardian.
