ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT: Appointment of the Vice Chancellor – Student Affairs

We are delighted to announce that following an extensive national
search, Dr. Juan Gonzalez has been appointed Vice Chancellor-Student
Affairs, effective September 1, 2014.

Dr. Gonzalez has served as Vice President for Student Affairs at a
number of prestigious universities over a 22-year period, including
California State University, San Bernardino; California Polytechnic
State University, San Luis Obispo; Georgetown University; Arizona State
University; and, most recently, at the University of Texas at Austin,
which has a student population of more than 50,000.

At UT Austin, Dr. Gonzalez oversaw an annual operating budget of over
$100 million and the annual distribution of nearly $600 million in
financial aid, in addition to a $125 million capital budget. He has
also developed numerous innovative programs and activities throughout
his career aimed at improving the overall student experience. The early
intervention programs he created have resulted in higher retention and
graduation rates, reducing time-to-degree and educational costs for
students and the university. As a first-generation college graduate, he
is committed to expanding college access, opportunity and success for
students.

Dr. Gonzalez is a collaborative, team-oriented leader who forms strong
partnerships with students, faculty, staff and administrators, and works
collectively to promote student engagement and learning. His leadership
philosophy aligns well with UC San Diego’s vision of being a
student-centered, research-focused, service-oriented public university.

Dr. Gonzalez received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, his M.A. in
Bilingual-Bicultural Education from the University of Texas at San
Antonio, and his B.A. in Latin-American Studies from Texas Tech
University.

We sincerely thank members of the search committee, which was co-chaired
by Frances Contreras, for their extraordinary efforts to conduct this
national search. We also appreciate the input from members of the
campus community who attended the Vice Chancellor – Student Affairs
candidate forums.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Gonzalez to UC San Diego.
