Ah, barbarians – those loveable rascals who show up by the tens of millions only to be tragically mowed down by a heroic gang of eight. Fresh off their spectacular massacre at Sparta, these wacky scoundrels have regrouped to conquer yet another ancient kingdom: the Roman Empire. But no massive foreign invasion would be complete without dramatically delivered one-liners – and, of course, mismatching British accents.
In “”The Last Legion,”” pubescent king Romulus Augustus attempts to recruit a band of warriors to help him reclaim his fallen empire. Along the way, he teams up with a motley crew of barbarian survivors, including token sex object Mira (Aishwarya Rai) and led by Aurelius (Colin Firth). Yes, that’s right, Colin Firth – because really, who could portray a ferocious Roman champion better than that guy from “”Love Actually,”” “”Nanny McPhee”” and “”Bridget Jones’ Diary””? Based on the best-selling novel of the same name by Valerio Massimo Manfredi, “”Legion”” promises to be a low-rent, less CGI-ed version of winter epic “”300.”” If nothing else, at least this summer blockbuster, much like its predecessors, helps to debunk a popular myth: There is no such thing as strength in numbers.
