Site Seen: Chicago on a Bun

When In-N-Out offers protein-style burgers (lettuce instead of a bun) and McDonald’s serves yogurt, it’s nice to sit down at a restaurant that is honest about what it is – an indulgence. Chicago on a Bun offers a classic, laid-back atmosphere with a taste of home, even if you aren’t from Chicago.

Nestled in the Towne Center Drive shopping center near UTC mall, Chicago on a Bun has unobtrusive wooden cafe furniture that includes two outdoor tables with large umbrellas bearing the famous hot dog brand Vienna Beef. Inside, a flat-screen television displays news and sports. The high ceilings and small storefront give the place a quieter feel than the busy parking lot right through the window.

Lining the walls are Bulls, Bears, White Sox and Cubs memorabilia, along with photos of the Chicago skyline and a picture of Mike Ditka showing the bird. One picture shows a line of young men in World War II military uniforms. A small caption under the photo says that all the young men came from one Chicago family, and that all of them fought and survived the war. Next to that is a letter from a satisfied Chicago on a Bun customer, Brett Pavolli, whose favorite dish is the hamburger.

“”This is my favorite because every time that I eat one, the Berger [sic] just melts in my mouth until it is transparent enough to swallow,”” his letter stated.

Chicago on a Bun does have some excellent food, ranging from Chicago-style sandwiches to plain old hot dogs. Make sure to try the Firedog (with spicy meat), and get it Chicago style, which includes peppers, onions, tomatoes, celery salt and a pickle. Spring for the meal deal and get fresh potato chips.

They also have draft and bottled beer for a few bucks, and root beer floats as well. Even their fries – or chili fries – go well with the calming atmosphere of the restaurant. It’s easy get lost in the various tidbits on the walls. It’s no wonder that the letter writer enjoyed it so much.

His letter said, “”To conclude, I am very frustrated in how I don’t get to eat here everyday [sic].””
