Summer Movie Preview: Bewitched

The perky nose wiggle is back in action! Director Nora Ephron (“You’ve Got Mail,” “Sleepless in Seattle”) is bringing a version of the ’60s television series “Bewitched” to the big screen. In the film, movie producers approach a fading action star, Jack Wyatt (adult child Will Ferrell), to star as Darrin Stephens in a remake of the classic sitcom. When he stumbles upon unknown actress Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman), Jack believes that he has found the perfect Samantha Stephens, an accurate choice, since Isabel happens to be a witch in real life. Soon romantic feelings develop between Jack and Isabel off-screen, Isabel reveals her secret, and the couple’s lives begin to mimic those of their characters — in a zany sitcom fashion, of course. After the disappointing “The Stepford Wives,” the notion of Nicole Kidman in a romantic comedy filled with fantasy is a bit disheartening, but perhaps the influx of Ferrell’s signature spastic schmuck and Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine’s comedic experience will generate some catalytic screen chemistry.
